Phone & Internet in Korea
If you are calling Korea from another country, you must dial the country code (82), the area code for which part of Korea you want to call (the area code for Seoul is “02”) and then the number you want to dial.
It is also important to remember that when you call Korea, you must drop the first zero in an area code or cellphone number. For example, the area code for Seoul is (02). However, if you are calling outside of Korea, you will dial 82-2 + the number you want to dial.
To call our office from outside of Korea, it would be: 82-2-2220-1849
To call my cellphone from outside of Korea, it would be: 82-10-3199-9633
(Note – if you are calling in Korea, you would not drop the zero and the first part would be dialed as “010”).
If you want to keep in touch with friends and family back home, there are several good options. One option is to use International Calling Cards which are a great deal. You can get a lot of hours from the International Phone Cards for very little money. As a welcoming gift, we have included a free International Calling Card in our Orientation Package which we prepare for all of our new teachers to Korea. These calling cards are available at convenience stores and newspaper kiosks everywhere. Important – do NOT use regular long distance as it is much more expensive. Stick to the calling cards or use Skype, which is a very inexpensive way to call home. Also, when calling home make sure you set up a good time to call with your friends and family back home. One last point to make about phones in Korea is that you should be aware of some of the important numbers. Note that 911 is the opposite in Korea – the number is 119. The important numbers for Korea are:
Emergency Rescue (Fire and Ambulance) 119
Medical Emergency 129
Police 112
Report a spy 113
Directory Assistance 114
International Dialing Information 00794
International Operator 00799
The internet is another great way to keep in touch with friends and family. Programs like Skype and MSN allow you to chat with family members for next to nothing. Your school will have internet access that you can use to keep in touch with your family. Also, you can have the internet installed easily and inexpensively at home if you want. Most modern apartments in Korea come equipped with broadband and the cost of a high-speed internet access connection with unlimited access time is very cheap. Alternatively, if you only use the internet a little, you could use one of the many PC Bangs, which rent computer time for about $1 an hour.
